Market Activity - December 2022

 

Here’s a roundup of announcements from the past month that give an idea of the dynamics of the various hydrogen market segments.

Announcements of upcoming products or pilots:

  • The French company CMAR, which sells a range of specialized vehicles, has presented its first hydrogen-powered sweeper model, the Green Machine 500H2.
  • California-based start-up Hyperion has introduced its XP-1 model of hydrogen-powered car with a futuristic design. The announced autonomy of the XP-1 is 1600 km (1000 miles).
  • Rolls Royce and EasyJet have tested the first hydrogen jet engine.
  • The French-Moroccan startup NAMX has announced the development of a hydrogen powered SUV (HUV). It will be equipped with removable secondary tanks.
  • Small-scale production of BMW’s hydrogen SUV, the iX5, has begun in Germany. The first tests are expected in early 2023.
  • Toyota will develop a hydrogen version of its Hilux model.
  • Glasgow-based Hydrogen Vehicle Systems (HVS) is developing a heavy-duty hydrogen truck with the support of the UK government.
  • Airbus is developing a fuel cell aircraft engine that will power the propellers of one of its “ZEROe” prototypes.

First deliveries:

  • Frankfurt’s public transport operator RMV (Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund) has received the first Coradia iLint hydrogen train from Alstom, out of an order for 27 trains.
  • Liverpool receives its first Enviro400FCEV hydrogen bus. The Liverpool Transport Authority should eventually receive 20 of these double-decker buses.

Growth markets:

  • Plug Power has started production of fuel cells at its plant in Slingerlands, NewYork. The plant is expected to employ up to 1600 people over the next five years.
